Fall FAMILY PHOTOS IN METRO-DETROIT
Fall in Michigan is beautiful, but fleeting. There is a certain magic in booking the perfect date—one that coincides with peak autumn colors and weather that allows you to layer up in soft, comfy sweaters and feel truly cozy.
This season has a way of reminding us that the holidays are coming, the kids are growing, and it might be time to update the family photos so we can send out those Christmas cards before it's too late.
As fall family photography season begins, photographers seem to come out of the woodwork with mini sessions, special events, and beautiful seasonal locations. And honestly? We each offer something unique to us and there is room for everyone!
In addition to considering price, location, and style, I encourage you to pay attention to one more thing:
How much time does your family actually need?
Some families genuinely prefer a quick ten to fifteen minute session because they need a light at the end of the tunnel. Mom and Dad may just want that one beautiful image of everyone smiling at the camera, and that's okay! It is truly wonderful that there are so many incredible local photographers that offer these quick and simple photoshoots!
But before I only promote everyone else, I obviously have a larger point here.
Bear with me. I like to take my time.

Time Is Money.
So many people say that, but for some reason, that just isn't how my brain works.
I believe time is a commodity with far greater value.
More money can be made, but my time here is finite.
That might make some people anxious about how they spend their time, but it has made me cautious and particular. I want to enjoy my time, and I want to help others enjoy the time they spend with me. That belief has become an important part of how I approach photography.
In photography, so many of the standards are based on how quickly you can accomplish things. Sessions are getting shorter. People want to move through poses and get to the next one. Galleries are expected to be delivered quickly.
But I often think about what happens when you watch a seasoned photographer using a film camera. They slow down. They observe. They wait. They choose each move with intention. They trust themselves—their education, their experience, and the years they have spent learning their craft—so that the choices they make in that moment are calculated.
Taking their time isn't a sign that they don't know what they are doing.
It's often the opposite. They are paying attention. They are trusting their instincts. They are waiting for the light, the expression, the movement, or the moment to come together. Taking their time helps ensure they get the image they envisioned. Or sometimes, something even better.
I think we could all benefit from slowing down a little. Because when we are constantly focused on getting to the next thing, we risk missing what is happening right in front of us. And in photography, I never want to be so focused on finishing the session that I miss the moment that makes it worth remembering.

These Memories Aren’t Just for Us
This summer has been filled with more family adventures than ever before, and I have loved every bit of quality time we've been able to spend together.
I have always felt a strong pull to document these memories—not just to have the photos, but to preserve what these seasons felt like.
I used to be judged for posting too much on social media. But I always saw it differently. To me, it was a digital scrapbook. A place where memories could pop up unexpectedly and make me smile all over again. A place where I could repost an old photo or screenshot it and send it to my teenagers, reminding them how small—or goofy—they once were.
But the truth is, these memories aren't just for me. They are for the kids.
They are for them to look back and remember what this season of life felt like.
Which brings me to my point.
A posed, everyone-looking-at-the-camera image is wonderful—and I will always try to get one for you. Especially if you're dreaming of a beautiful photo for your holiday card. But in twenty years, will that be the image that tells your family's story?
Or will it be the outtake of brother and sister lying in the grass, being silly, that reminds you of all the times they did the same thing in the backyard? Will we have time to capture the moment your kids race into your arms?
The game of peekaboo. The way they stop to smell a beautiful flower. The sweet bear hug from your wild little one. The tiny hand holding Dad's. Because as they grow, it all changes so much. These are the moments I don't want us to miss. The ones that may not seem important enough to capture until they are the only things left that can bring you back to that moment.
So yes, we will get the beautiful photo where everyone is looking at the camera. But I also want to give your family the time and space to simply be together. To play. To talk. To laugh. To run. To be silly. Because the goal isn't just to create a beautiful photograph. It's to preserve a memory of what your family felt like in this season. And someday, I hope those photographs help your children remember it, too.
Maybe It’s Just My Lack of Urgency...
Some people could accuse me of taking my time simply because I am late to everything.
Like my mama. 😂
And honestly? It probably is psychologically connected.
I have a terrible lack of urgency coupled with an intensity that would make you think I would be incredibly punctual. Instead, I allow that enthusiasm to distract me with something shiny, a really good conversation, or the need to tell one more story.
I am fully aware of what some people might call my faults. And I have decided to embrace them. Because maybe my inability to rush through life has a purpose. Maybe my tendency to get distracted by the little things is exactly why I notice them. Maybe talking too much is why your child eventually feels comfortable enough to tell me the funniest story they have ever heard. Maybe my lack of urgency gives your family permission to slow down, breathe, and stop trying to get everything right. So yes, I am aware that I may be genetically predisposed to taking my time. But I am choosing to see it as a positive. A purpose, even.
Because I will never rush through a session with your family.
I will never be so focused on the clock that I miss the moment. I will never choose efficiency over connection. And I will never ask your family to hurry up just because I have decided our time is up while your child is finally comfortable, your family is finally relaxed, or the moment we have been waiting for is finally unfolding. There is a plan. But there is also room for the unexpected. And honestly, the unexpected moments are often the ones worth waiting for.
Trust the Process—Even When It Looks Like We’re Just Talking
I promise to only get distracted by the things that matter.
Your kids being themselves.
A funny story they are excited to tell me.
A random fact about their favorite dinosaur, video game, princess, or the amazing thing they did at school.
Sometimes, instead of asking your child to smile, I will ask them a question about their story. And then another. I might let them talk, laugh, show me their personality, or completely change the subject. Because that is often where the sincere smile comes from. Letting your children unfold with me is more important than having them perfectly follow instructions. So trust that I do have a plan—even if it sometimes looks like I am just sitting there having a conversation with your child. I am watching. I am listening. I am learning what makes them light up.
And while they are telling me about the things they love, I am also looking for the little moments you might not see—the expressions, the laughter, the hand movements, and the pieces of their personality that make them *them*. Sometimes the best photograph happens in the middle of the conversation. Not after I ask them to smile. But because, for a moment, they forgot I was taking their picture.
WARNING: You May Experience More Than Just a Photo Session
If people came with warning labels, mine would probably say:
⚠️ May talk too much—and ask your kids about dinosaurs, sports, school, and who has the stinkiest feet.
⚠️ Easily distracted by beautiful light, genuine laughter, and the moments you may not notice.
⚠️ Does not expect children to sit still, perform, or smile on command.
⚠️ Will arrive with a plan, but leave room for your family to be yourselves.
⚠️ May become genuinely invested in your family by the end of our session.
⚠️ Will always take my time with you.
If you're looking for a Metro Detroit family photographer who moves quickly through a checklist, I may not be the right fit. But if you want someone who will guide you when needed, give your children time to warm up, and create space for the real moments to unfold, we might be a great match.
I will capture the beautiful portrait for your holiday cards—but I will also look for the tiny hand holding Dad's, the wild bear hug, the sibling silliness, and the moments that feel unmistakably like your family. As a local family photographer serving Metro Detroit, Canton, Plymouth, Livonia, Northville, Ann Arbor, Belleville, and surrounding Southeast Michigan communities, I care about more than creating a beautiful gallery. I want your session to feel relaxed, personal, and genuinely enjoyable. I want your children to remember having fun. I want you to feel cared for. And I want your photographs to remind you what this season of family life actually felt like.
So, if you're looking for family photos, come as you are. Bring the kids, the chaos, the stories, and even the teenager who would rather be anywhere else.
I’ll bring a plan, plenty of patience, and probably a few distractions worth remembering.
