Your Session Guide

A portrait of who you are—
and the beginning of what's next
Your senior or graduation session is about more than a cap and gown or a beautiful outfit. It's a chance to pause in the middle of a season that is changing quickly and celebrate who you are right now—your personality, your accomplishments, the things you love, and the people who have helped you get here.
This guide will help you feel prepared without taking away the fun. From choosing outfits and personal touches to knowing what to expect once we begin, everything is designed to help you arrive feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to enjoy the experience.

01 — Introductions

We'll begin by getting to know each other and talking through what you brought, what you want from your session, and anything you're especially excited to photograph.
If you're nervous in front of the camera, you're definitely not the first person I've photographed who feels that way. We won't jump immediately into complicated poses. We'll start simply and let you settle in.

02 — We Build Variety

We'll work through your different outfits, locations, and ideas while creating a mix of portraits—from classic photographs that your family will love to images that feel more candid, expressive, and completely you.
I'll give you direction throughout the session, including where to stand, how to move, and what to do with your hands. You don't have to arrive knowing how to pose or perform for the camera.

03 — We Make It Yours

This is where we bring your personality into the photographs.
Want to incorporate your sport? Let's do it. Bring your guitar. Bring the book you've read a dozen times. Bring your flowers, your artwork, your letter jacket, your favorite pair of shoes, or nothing at all.
We'll also make time for the people who helped you get here. If your session includes parents, siblings, grandparents, or another important person in your life, we'll create photographs with them, too.
The goal isn't to create a collection of photographs that could belong to anyone.
It's to create photographs that could only belong to you.

04 — After Your Session

Once your session is complete, I'll carefully hand-edit your viable images in the Rooted Vision style, creating a cohesive gallery that gives you a beautiful variety of portraits to remember this season by.
Your full gallery will be delivered within 2–3 weeks of your session. From there, you'll be able to enjoy your photographs digitally and choose the images you'd like to print, display, or turn into an album or other heirloom artwork.
Because someday you'll look back at these photographs and realize that this wasn't simply the year you graduated.
It was the beginning of everything that came next.

Preparing for Your Session
The best senior portraits feel like you. Before choosing outfits or props, think about what you want these photographs to say about this season of your life. Maybe that's classic and timeless, maybe it's creative and colorful, maybe it's athletic, artistic, bookish, adventurous, or somewhere in between. There isn't one right way to do a senior session.
Plan a few different looks
I recommend bringing a few outfits that feel different from one another without feeling like you're dressing up as someone you're not. A combination of casual, polished, and personality-driven looks gives us plenty of variety while keeping the gallery cohesive.
Choose clothes that fit comfortably and make you feel confident. Try everything on ahead of time, especially if you haven't worn an outfit recently, and make sure you can comfortably sit, walk, move, and pose in it. Simple textures, layers, classic pieces, and thoughtfully chosen accessories photograph beautifully, while large logos, distracting graphics, and extremely busy patterns can pull attention away from you.
And you absolutely do not need to buy an entirely new wardrobe for your session. Some of the best outfits are already hanging in your closet because they are pieces that genuinely feel like you.
Don't forget the little things
Bring the details that tell your story. A favorite book, instrument, sports equipment, artwork, hobby, letter jacket, medals, flowers, or another meaningful item can give your session a personal touch. You don't need to bring everything you love—just a few things that feel important to this chapter of your life.
If you're including your cap and gown, bring them along even if you aren't planning to wear them for the entire session. We can create a few classic graduation portraits without allowing them to take over the entire gallery.
Hair, makeup + grooming
If you're having professional hair or makeup done, schedule it with enough time to spare before your session so you aren't arriving rushed. Keep your look true to yourself—your portraits should still look like you, just a little more polished.
If you're doing your own hair and makeup, consider testing your look beforehand and bringing a few essentials for touch-ups.

"You will teach them to fly,
but they will not fly your flight.
You will teach them to dream,
but they will not dream your dream.
You will teach them to live,
but they will not live your life.
Nevertheless, in every flight,
in every life, in every dream,
the print of the way you taught
will always remain."
